OUR MISSION
The educational mission of the Ob/Gyn Department is to educate residents so that they are not only excellent practitioners of obstetrics and gynecology, but also superior candidates if they wish to pursue a career in the subspecialties of Reproductive Endocrinology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology or Urogynecology.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Obstetrics and Gynecology is a four year residency program fully accredited by the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) consisting of 16 residents based at John Peter Smith Hospital, the county hospital serving Tarrant County and Harris Methodist Fort Worth, a private hospital.

Elwyn M. Grimes, MD., FACOG graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN and completed his internship at George W. Hubbard Hospital in Nashville, TN. He completed his residency at Kansas City General Hospital and Medical Center in Kansas City and fellowship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and the Harvard School of Medicine.
In 2007 Dr. Grimes was appointed Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at John Peter Smith Hospital and Professor of Ob/Gyn and Reproductive Endocrinology at the University of North Texas Health Science Center.

David Moreland, MD., FACOG graduated from LSU School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at LSU Medical Center. He is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and an Associate Professor of Ob/Gyn at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Moreland was appointed Residency Program Director in 2005. |

TEAM CONCEPT
The program has been structured as a team concept with each team consisting of:
- 1 to 2 General Ob/Gyn Faculty directly responsible for 2 residents, providing excellent communication with faculty with a small resident to faculty ratio
- 2 Ob/Gyn Residents: 2nd yr level & 4th yr level
- 1 FP Resident at a 2nd yr level or 3rd yr level
- 1 FP Intern or Ob Intern
- 3 to 4 nurse practitioners
- Medical Students
The approach to patient care involves a close working relationship between the faculty, residents and nurse practitioners.

TEACHING SCHEDULE
Didactic activities are considered an essential component of the total education program with 5 hours of designated teaching per week. During the teaching sessions, the resident has no other responsibilities.
APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS
Our residency program participates in the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) and accepts four PGY-1 residents each year. Candidates selected to interview must have taken USMLE. During the interview, candidates will have the opportunity to meet with members of the faculty, staff and resident physicians. Interviews are scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays, November through January.
